Healthy Tips for Study Success

It's that time of semester again where exams loom and major assignments are due. This can be an incredibly stressful time as we near the end of semester. Instead of letting stress, anxiety, and sleep deprived assignment writing get the better of you, use these handing hints to end the semester strongly.

1. Eat healthy
It might be very tempting to reach for those chocolate biscuits sitting in the pantry as it is an easy and cheap snack. However, eating healthy snacks such as unsalted nuts or fruit will help improve your energy levels better and help keep your brain focused for longer. This is due to the fact that snacks such as fruit and nuts release energy slower allowing you to stay energized for longer, rather than an instant sugar hit form sugary snacks that will result in a harsh energy crash.

2. Take a study break
During this time of semester you may feel like you're being crushed by the weight of assignments and exams and that the only solution is to not leave your desk until it is all done. However, it is really important that you take study breaks during this time to allow your brain to relax. Exercising can be a really helpful form of stress relief during this time as not only are you still looking after your physical health, but also your mental health. Try going for a run, swim, or even take the dog for a walk.

3. Sleep
This is one of the most important things to do while studying .It can do more harm than good staying up all night to finish an assignment or cram for an exam. Always make sure you get a good solid nights sleep (usually about 8 hours) to allow your brain to repair itself and rejuvenate to allow you to smash out another day of studying. Your brain will thank you for it.

Follow these simple steps and you'll finish the year off strongly. You're nearly there keep pushing through. Good Luck!

Student Evaluations Survey

In order for Monash Sport to continue to provide our members with the best service possible we are conducting research into Monash Sport's role in the student experience at Monash University. Student surveys are now open and should only take 5 minutes.

It is vital for us to know what our members think of us so we can improve our servicing of students in the future, and the offering of Sport services to Monash University students. Last year we had 966 respondents, which is a great response. This year we are aiming at getting over 1000 members to respond in order to develop our facilities and timetables to best suit student needs.

 In 2015 members were generally satisfied with their experience with Monash Sport, with over 65% extremely satisfied, but there is always room for improvement. We'd love to hear from you about your experience at Monash Sport, and how this has reflected on your time at Monash University, in order to help us improve our services.

Footy Colours Day Recap

A celebration of all things football was the standout highlight of Week 9, as Monash Sport hosted Footy Colours Day across Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses.

Footy Colours Day was a huge success with many students and staff getting involved across all campuses. A variety of football oriented activities were on offer to all skill levels, with some students and staff kicking a football for the first time. Prizes were up for grabs, all while creating awareness for the Fight Cancer Foundation.

At the Footy Colours Day event on Clayton campus, the winners of the 2016 Monash AFL Footy Tipping Competition were awarded prizes, with colleagues of winner Hamish Ramsay presented with a 50-inch plasma TV on his behalf (pictured below). With TeamMONASH holding a barbeque while playing music, and Monash City Council holding a free Tai Chi class as part of Monash in Motion, an exciting atmosphere filled Clayton campus' Northern Plaza.

The handball competition put student's accuracy to the test, while vertical leaps were tested against the record of AFL star Nic Naitanui. The most popular event of the day however, was the kicking accuracy competition, which saw students attempt to kick a football into a wheelie bin at the other side of the Northern Plaza lawn. Many attempted the feat, but only three students succeeded.

Over at Caulfield campus, healthy competition developed over who could kick a football across the Caulfield Green to the Soundshell. With the winner coming very close!

Staff and students at Peninsula campus enjoyed a MONSU run barbecue and football activities alongside live music by a student band. 

Well done to everyone who got involved and showed off their impressive skills!

Footy Colours Day Clayton

With the AFL finals heating up, and the grand final just around the corner, it's time to get your team colours out (possibly for the last time this year) and celebrate Footy Colours Day with us! Footy Colours Day is an event to celebrate all things football, all while helping to raise much needed money for the Fight Cancer Foundation to help kids who are fighting cancer. We are encouraging everyone to dress up in whatever football colours you want. AFL, soccer, rugby, whatever football code you follow we want to see it!

Monash Uni Clayton campus will be holding Footy Colours Day on Thursday 22 September from 12-2pm at the Northern Plaza. Join in on a fun filled day of festivities with plenty of competitions and activities happening on the day. Amongst the activities there will be a footy kicking accuracy competition, handball target, vertical jump test, and even soccer juggling. So get on your boots and show everyone who has the best football talents on campus.

We will also be having a special ceremony at 1pm at the Northern Plaza to award the major prize winners of the Monash AFL Footy Tipping competition. The competition saw more than 1,000 competitors with the winner taking home a great prize! come on down to see who wins and what they will be taking home.

So get your friends together and wear your team colours one last time to celebrate the end to a great footy season and support a great cause.

Peninsula Facility Improvements

Monash Sport have completed two of its 2016 SSAF (Student Services and Amenities Fee) funded facility improvement projects, enhancing the campus experience for staff and students on Peninsula campus.

Bubble Soccer has grown in popularity on Clayton and Caulfield campuses, and will now be present at selected future Peninsula campus as well. Bubble Soccer debuted on Peninsula campus at Winterfest, and was enjoyed by all who took part. Expect to see Bubble Soccer at numerous future events.

A student and Monash Sport members lounge has been established in the foyer of MPARC, to help students and members relax and wind down after study or a workout. The new lounge includes a Foosball table, two Xbox One consoles (pictured above) with motion capture accessories Kinect, as well sporting and racing games. All games have a sport/movement theme and are available for use at no cost during MPARC opening hours.

Monash University's Peninsula campus will see the event held on Tuesday 20 September 3-6pm. The day will be held around the Hockey Centre and will see a multitude of activities, including longest kick, penalty shootout competitions, vertical jump, handball target and even a bungy run! Perfect to have a friendly contest between friends with bragging rights on the line.

If you get tired of all the sporting activities there will be free face painting (footy colour theme of course) and a BBQ provided by MONSU, all while a live music from our very own student band plays.

Afterwards, make sure you head on down to the Hockey Centre at 6:30pm for the annual MONSU Soccer Cup that will see Peninsula vs. Caulfield in a highly anticipated match.

So get your friends together, wear your team colours and celebrate all things football for a good cause!

Springtime Nutrition

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer it's the perfect time of year to kick start a healthy lifestyle and put the miserable winter blues behind you.

Spring is a time where plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables come into season ready and waiting to be eaten. Some may think you have to eat the same mountain of greens over and over again to get the best nutrition, but that doesn't have to be the case!

To avoid getting bored of eating the same healthy foods over and over again try mixing it up (literally) by making some super delicious, super good for you smoothies. Smoothies are the perfect way to incorporate all best nutrients into your diet in an easy, delicious and fun way, perfect for those warm lazy Sunday afternoons.

With the AFL finals in full swing and the Grand Final just around the corner its time to get your team colours out and wear them proudly for Footy Colours Day. The day will be a celebration of all things footy as well as support the Fight Cancer Foundation in helping raise much needed money for kids fighting cancer. We encourage everyone to dress up in whatever football colours you like, AFL, Soccer, Rugby whatever form of football you follow we would love to see!

Caulfield will see the event held on Wednesday September 21 from 12-2pm. Join in all the festivities with a longest kick competition and handball target on the Campus Green, and a penalty shootout competition and vertical jump at the informal sports area. So put on your boots and footy gear and prove your the best football player at Caulfield.

If you need a break from all the sporting activities there will also be free face painting (to show your team passion) and a BBQ provided by MONSU, all this while a DJ spins the latest tunes.

After an exciting day filled with football fun, head on down to the Peninsula campus to watch the annual MONSU Soccer Cup between Peninsula and Caulfield, kicking off at 6:30pm.

Monash in Motion Free Zumba and Tai Chi Sessions!

As apart of a joint initiative with Monash City Council to help us keep fit and active. Monash in Monash is set to be an exciting week of events, including FREE Zumba and Tai Chi sessions at the Northern Plaza. This is a great way to get in some quick physical activity and help relieve some stress mid-semester brings with the pile up of assignments and deadlines.

On September 21 Zumba will be held from 12 - 12.40pm. Zumba is a great workout with a difference, it combines elements of cardio with dance to give a calorie burning workout that doesn't feel like a drag to do.

On September 22 Tai Chi sessions will be held from 12 - 12.40pm. Tai Chi is a form of internal Chinese martial art that has many physical and mental health benefits, including meditation, which is great for calming the mind during a stressful semester.

We encourage everyone to come on down to the Northern Plaza at Clayton and give it a try!

Monash Research - The Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre

Are you interested in brain science?

Have you recently had a concussion or been knocked out?

If so, we need your help

The Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre is seeking right handed, healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 55 to help us investigate the relationship between changes in brain activity and symptoms after a concussion. We are using a non-invasive type of brain stimulation to learn more about changes post concussion and during recovery.

Participation will involve visiting our research centre in Prahran for three research sessions.  The first session will occur within 1 month since your concussion and take approximately 3 hours. The following sessions will occur 3 and 6 months post-concussion and will take approximately 2 hours each.

You will be compensated for your time and travel costs.

Together we will complete an interview, do some thinking tasks, take a recording of your brain waves and give you a short session of non-invasive brain stimulation.

Staying Energized During Mega Swim

With the MS 24 Hour Mega Swim now only a few short weeks away, we know everyone is getting eager to get in the water. To help our teams stay awake and energized for the full 24 hours we have compiled some tips and tricks to help you get the best out of the event without feeling like you might pass out from exhaustion.

Firstly, and most importantly, stay hydrated and do get some rest. This includes drinking water whenever possible (pool water doesn't count, drink fresh water!), and getting some form of shut eye throughout the 24 hours. We will have a designated rest area so people can come chill out, have some quite time and have a quick nap.

To help keep you energized we have very enthusiastic volunteers and support crew who will help you out with any issues and double as a cheer squad to help cheer on all teams to the finish. We will also have a DJ throughout the night pumping all the best tunes to help keep everyone in the zone and pumped up for those graveyard swimming shifts. So no matter what time you are swimming the pool will be a buzz with enthusiasm.

Spring is Here!

Now that the dark cold Winter months are gone and the beautiful Spring weather is here its time to get up and make the most of it. Here are some tips that could help make Springtime the best time of year:

1. Get up early and move
Although hitting the snooze button may sound tempting, getting up early and moving, whether that's a nice stroll or a sweat session in the gym, can help make you feel energized for the rest of the day. This should get easier as Spring has warmer weather and longer daylight hours.

2. Get some fresh air and relax outside
When the weather is warm take some time out of your busy schedule to chill out and soak in the warm sun. Not only will you get some vitamin D but by relaxing and taking in the weather it may help relax your mind and body after long day..

3. Stay hydrated and eat healthy
Just because the cold and flu season may seem to be over doesn't mean you should slip on your eating habits. Make sure you drink plenty of water and eat a range of fruits and vegetables to keep that immune system in top shape so you can enjoy the season more.
