Monash Tops The List For Student Engagement

A recent study has revealed Monash University as a leader in student sporting activity over Australia's most prestigious universities.

The Australian University Sport Business Analysis Survey for 2016 identified Monash's sporting facilities to have the highest number of annual visits from the Go8 (Group of 8) this year, at 1,285,417 visits.

Of total visits to Monash Sport facilities this year, 62% have been students, ranking Monash as the second highest proportion of student visits in the Go8. When compared to other Group of 8 universities such as The University of Melbourne, The University of Sydney and UNSW, this ranking shows Monash to have a clear focus on student experiences on campus. Holding events such as the College Clash, MS Mega Swim and Winterfest to engage students and create an enjoyable univeristy environment.

Other key findings from the USBA survey include:
  • Monash University has the highest total annual visits from the Go8 (Group 1, n=6 respondents).
  • Monash University has the second highest proportion (%) of student visits from the Go8 (Group 1, n=6 respondents).  Figure 1 demonstrates clearly that our focus on student experiences has resulted in year on year growth of the proportion of our student visits.
  • Monash University has the highest number of enrolments/membership sign ups from the Go8 (Group 1, n=6 respondents).
  • Monash University has the highest number of Total EAFU athletes supported from the Go8 (Group 1, n=5 respondents).
  • Monash University has the highest number of enrolments/membership sign ups from the Go8 (Group 1, n=6 respondents).
  • Monash University has the second highest number of students employed from the Go8 (Group 1, n=6 respondents).

Meet Davide: Swim Fit Instructor

Swim Fit Instructor Davide

Did you know there's a group fitness class at the Doug Ellis Swimming Pool on Clayton campus?

If you know how to swim and want to jump in the pool for some exercise weekly, our Swim Fit classes are for you!

Swim Fit is designed to keep you fit, as well as to improve your swimming technique with guidance from our qualified instructors.

Davide is one of our qualified Swim Fit instructors, and says any keen swimmer can join a Swim Fit class.

"We swim between 2-3kms each session in Swim Fit, but don't let that discourage you! If you have been swimming 1km on your own, can swim freestyle and another stroke, and even if you can swim 100m without stopping, come give it a try," he said.

"Start off with just swimming a warm up and build your endurance up through regular attendance and even individual practice, so that eventually you are able to complete the whole session!"

Swim Fit is designed for adults and catered for those who prefer swimming in a group rather than alone, features Davide enjoys when running a class.

"You get to train with an awesome squad of like minded swimmers! I know I find it hard myself going for swims on my own, so having that squad there, and a coach to push you along is great motivation. Other than the environment, it's a great way to keep fit and something different to other fitness classes offered at Monash Sport," he said.

"I gained my AUSTSWIM Teacher of Competitive Strokes and Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Qualifications when I was 17 years old, and started out teaching swim lessons on a Saturday Morning and coaching the junior squad once a week."

"Now at Monash Sport, I coach 4 of the 5 Swim Fit sessions and teach mainly Adult swimming lessons on a Saturday Morning."

Join Davide in the Doug Ellis Pool for a Swim Fit class today! Classes run for 30 minutes, and are a great option for a morning or lunch time workout.
